Sony NEX-VG10E camcorder debuts swappable lenses

Sony NEX-VG10E camcorder has swappable lenses

The Sony NEX-VG10E

First of many?

Sony has announced the NEX-VG10E, the world’s first consumer-level camcorder with an interchangeable lens system.

Available in late September, the Sony NEX-VG10E sports a large image sensor, which makes background blurring easier through an improved depth-of-field potential when fitted with the correct lens. It records 1080i HD footage onto either Memory Stick Pro Duo or SD memory cards. Pricing is still to be revealed.

NEX-VG10E lenses

The NEX-VG10E is compatible with E-mount and A-mount lenses, the latter with an optional adaptor. It comes supplied with an 18-200mm E-mount lens.

Other E-mount lenses available include 16mm fixed and 18-55mm lenses. Both are commonly found and used with the Sony NEX range of interchangeable lens digital stills cameras.

There are many A-mount lenses available – up to now, these have mainly been sold for use with the Sony Alpha range of DSLRs.

Sony sensor and creative effects

Inside the NEX-VG10E is a 14.2Mp CMOS sensor. This is APS-C sized, and is large compared to most other camcorders. This should make blurring the background much easier, providing more scope for creativity in film-making. According to Sony, the sensor can capture DSLR-quality still images.

Sony claims that stereo sound recording is improved with advanced processing software within the device and a sophisticated internal microphone design. There’s also a 3-inch LCD screen and an electronic viewfinder.

NEX-VG10E weight

At 1.3kg with 18-200mm lens, lens hood and battery all attached, the NEX-VG10E is no lightweight. Most of our other camcorders weigh in at less than half this.

Christopher Christoforou, Which? camcorders expert, said: ‘This is an interesting model, clearly designed for the keen amateur video maker who likes to experiment – and who doesn’t mind carrying a bit of extra weight around. We will be getting a model in imminently, and look forward to trying it out. Look out for our review very soon.’

Options for Sony NEX camcorder

A range of official accessories for the NEX-VG10E includes the ECM-CG50 external microphone and a dedicated soft carrying case (LCS-VCD). You can also buy longer lasting rechargeable batteries, including the NP-FV100 that Sony claims can provide power for up to 330 minutes of continuous HD shooting.
