Volkswagen has updated both its coupé models with BlueMotion efficiency technology, bringing improved fuel economy and lower emissions to diesel versions of the Scirocco and the Passat CC.
As BlueMotion Technology rather than full BlueMotion products, these vehicles don’t get bespoke bodywork and tweaked aerodynamics. But the addition of start-stop and regenerative braking still makes them the greenest VW Scirocco and Passat CC models available yet.
Volkswagen Scirocco BlueMotion Technology
BlueMotion Technology updates to the 138bhp version of the 2.0-litre TDI turbodiesel engine fitted regular and GT variants of the Volkswagen Scirocco sees a significant efficiency improvement.
Incorporating both start-stop and brake energy regeneration (which helps charge the battery, thus reducing the load on the alternator), cars equipped with the standard six-speed manual gearbox go from 55.4mpg combined to 62.8mpg combined – a 7.4mpg improvement.
As a result CO2 emissions fall from 134g/km to 118g/km. Meanwhile cars fitted with the optional DSG automatic transmission improve from 51.4mpg to 57.6mpg, and CO2 emission drop from 145g/km to 129g/km.
As a result these BlueMotion Technology models fall two tax bands, £35 a year.
Volkswagen Passat CC BlueMotion Technology
The same engine also gets an upgrade in the Passat CC, Volkswagen’s larger, four-door coupé.
With the same technology additions – start-stop and regenerative braking – this manages to achieve an even bigger improvement in the bigger car. Combined fuel economy increases from 50.4mpg to 60.1mpg, while CO2 falls from 146g/km to 125g/km – again a two tax-band drop worth £35 a year.
More powerful diesel benefits as well
Volkswagen is also taking this opportunity to tweak the more powerful 167bhp version of the 2.0-litre TDI engine fitted in both the Scirocco and the Passat CC.
With BlueMotion Technology, the Scirocco goes from 53.3mpg to 55.4mpg, with CO2 reduced from 139g/km to 134 g/km; the Passat CC goes from 50.4mpg to 57.6mpg, and from 146g/km CO2 to 129g/km.
DSG versions also improve, but not to quite the same extent.
The BlueMotion Technology versions of the Volkswagen Scirocco and the Volkswagen Passat CC are on sale now.
The Scirocco is priced from £21,500 for the 138bhp engine, £23,440 for 167bhp; the Passat CC from £23,555 to £25,350.
