HP webOS tablets leaked

Due in September according to leaked slides

HP Topaz Tablet

HP bought Palm in July for $1.2billion

HP’s plans for two new tablets, due to be announced in February, have been leaked online.

The two tablets, codenamed Opal and Topaz, feature 7-inch and 9-inch displays respectively and are expected to launch in September according to presentation slides leaked to Engadget.

They’re designed by subsidiary Palm, which HP bought for $1.2bn in July. It created the critically acclaimed webOS mobile operating system, and the Palm Pre phones.

Further details include plans for wi-fi-only and 3G + wi-fi versions of the Opal, the latter of which would launch on the O2 network in the UK. Previous Palm phones, such as the Palm Pre, have been exclusive to the O2 network in the past.

Engadget also claims its source indicated the tablets would use 1.2GHz processors.

Touch-sensitive controls

Photos of the leaked devices appear to show there are no physical buttons on the tablets, instead resorting to touch sensitive buttons and a glass-fronted touchscreen. Other identifiable features include a front-facing camera, and a rear-panel made from glossy black plastic.

HP’s tablets are likely to compete with the yet to be announced Apple iPad 2, and tablets announced at CES 2011 such as the Motorola Xoom and BlackBerry PlayBook.

HP is due to officially announce the tablets, and a third unknown product, on 9th February.
