According to sources ‘familiar with the matter’, the Apple iPad 2 is now in production ready for its release later this year.
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, they confirmed it will have a faster processor and graphics chip, and support FaceTime video chatting.
The Journal’s sources also indicated that the iPad 2 will be thinner and lighter than its predecessor, though it won’t have a higher resolution display as some have speculated.
Previous speculation has hinted at an April release for the iPad 2, and this news appears to confirm the likelihood of a spring 2011 launch – almost a year after the original iPad was released.

New tablet competition
Apple won’t have the market to itself any longer, however. Which? previewed numerous new tablets at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in January, including the BlackBerry PlayBook, Motorola Xoom, Asus Eee Pad Transformer and Asus Eee Slate.
Mobile phone manufacturer HTC is expected to announce its tablet offering at Mobile World Congress next week, and HP will officially announce two previously leaked Palm webOS tablets at an event later today.
