iPad prices slashed ahead of iPad 2 UK release

Most versions £100 cheaper than before

The iPad 2 is 33% thinner than the original, and at 8.8mm thick is actually thinner than the iPhone 4.

Now may be a good time to pick up an iPad at a knock-down price. Apple has slashed the price of the current iPad in anticipation of the iPad 2 UK release on March 25.

The current iPad, which went on sale in the UK in May last year, has sold nearly 15 million units. At its iPad 2 launch event yesterday, Apple announced the iPad 2 UK release date will be March 25, and that it will sell for the same prices as the current iPad did.

This has prompted a price-cut for the original iPad, while stocks last. Most versions are now £100 cheaper than before, so the 16GB wi-fi iPad costs just £329, and the cheapest 3G model is now £429.

In comparison, cheap Android tablets like the Advent Vega Tablet PC and Archos 101 currently retail for between £240 and £280, though neither score as highly as the iPad in our lab tested tablet reviews.

Even cheaper iPad’s can be found on Apple’s online refurb store, where it sells returned products. To see the deals, head over to Apple’s UK website, click on the ‘Store’ button at the top, and then scroll down to the ‘Special Deals’ box near the bottom of the page. On Apple’s refurb store, a 16GB wi-fi model will cost you £289. All refurbs are covered by a one year warranty.

The iPad 2 will come with a faster dual-core processor, and graphics that Apple says is nine times faster than the current iPad. Apple has added dual-cameras, so you can video chat and take photos or shoot video, and the iPad 2 is 33% thinner and 80 grams lighter.
