Latest Best Buy steamers revealed

Which? tests Lakeland, Rosemary Conley and more

Testing steamers

Which? has tested the Lakeland EXQ, Rosemary Conley Steam and Store, Morphy Richards Intellisteam steamers and just published results online.

In our latest test of steamers, we also included the innovative Breville 4 in 1 Multicooker, which can be used as a steamer. Only two of the products were good enough to be Best Buys.

Steamer design

Manufacturers hope that good looks and fancy features will encourage shoppers to consider their premium products a wise investment, rather than a cheap impulse purchase. Lakeland, Rosemary Conley and Morphy Richards hope that their latest additions will fit this bill.

Lakeland claims that its EXQ steamer’s ‘ivory and stainless steel finish, with modern, backlit blue LED buttons, will complement any kitchen setting’ and that is has ‘been thoroughly tried and tested to make sure it does the job brilliantly’. Morphy Richards has also updated its eye-catching Intellisteam 48780 to include simpler digital controls.

The Rosemary Conley Steam and Store is designed to allow you to steam a whole meal in the baskets, which turn into storage containers to keep in the fridge. This could make cooking healthy meals in advance that extra bit easier.

Do they cook well?

Which? kitchen appliance expert Lisa Galliers says: ‘A Best Buy steamer will cook individual foods just as well as when cooking a whole meal using all tiers. They’ll be easy to assemble and simple to use. A bad steamer will take ages to cook and it won’t cook it evenly.’

Steaming keeps more of the vitamins and nutrients in food than other cooking methods such as boiling, where nutrients leach away into the water. However, microwave steaming retains even more of the food’s nutrients, is quicker and uses lower temperatures and less water. Steamers do have the advantage, though, that you can steam more food at once.

Choosing the best steamer

We have reviews for 19 steamers online, including eight Best Buys. With products starting at just £10, up to more than £100 – there’s something for everyone’s budget.
