The Archos 101 G9 tablet

Archos has announced a new range of tablets called G9. The first two tablets in this range will go on sale in September. They feature fast processors and the option of 250GB hard drives. Prices will start from £199.

80 and 101

The 80 G9 is the smaller of the two models – it has a 8-inch screen. The 101 G9 sports a 10.1-inch sceen. See our reviews of the Archos 43 and Archos 5 to see how previous Archos models have fared in our lab tests.

Hard disks

The most unusual feature of these tablets is that they come with a choice of internal storage types. You can choose between hard disk or internal flash drive. The hard disk will be 250GB for both models, whereas the flash drive will be 16GB on the 80 and 32GB on the 101.

Hard disk models will be 2mm thicker and will weigh a little more, though they do open up the possibility of storing up to 40 full-length HD films. This is a rare feature on tablets.

Although hard disks can sometimes feel slow in operation, Archos said that the presence of a 4GB internal flash memory cache will keep things running smoothly.

Check out our lab test results of over 25 tablets.

Both tablets have dual core 1.5GHz processors inside. Most other tablets, such as the Apple iPad 2 and Motorola Xoom, make do with 1.0GHz processors.

Android 3.1

The 80 and 101 will run on Android 3.1 initially, with a likely upgrade to Android 3.2 in the near future.

Although most people will connect to the internet via wi-fi, the 80 and 101 also have small slots for inserting a proprietary 3G USB stick. This will be available for £50 and will work with a pay as you go data plan.
