Ricoh has unveiled a new rugged camera. The PX can be safely submerged in water for 1 hour down to a depth of up to 3 metres, according to Ricoh.
The 16Mp model can also survive a drop to the ground from a height of 1.5m. Ricoh hopes to tempt outdoor and underwater sports enthusiasts with this model. At 156 grams with a soap bar shape and non-protruding lens, it’s designed to be easy to carry around.

The Ricoh PX isn’t the only tough camera available. The Canon Powershot D10, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT10 and Olympus mju Tough 8010 provide stiff opposition. The Canon and Olympus claim to be waterproof to 10 metres.
The PX has a 28-140mm lens, 2.7-LCD screen and can record 720p HD video. It can be charged via the mains as normal or through a USB connection on a computer.
To provide an extra layer of protection, especially from scratches, there’s an optional silicone protective cover. These are available in the same colour options as the camera, including lime green and pink as well as the more usual camera colours.

The Ricoh PX will be available from July, for a price of £180.
