Asda tempts shoppers with £5 ‘thank you’ vouchers

Supermarket price wars: Asda slashes cost of 3,000 items

Asda is to slash prices on 3,000 household items

Asda says it will ‘roll back’ the prices of 3,000 everyday items and entice customers with a £5 ‘thank you’ voucher this week, in a bid to defeat its rivals in the supermarket price wars.

Not to be outdone by other supermarket price promotions, Asda says from today it will slash the price of around 3,000 everyday products such as bread, butter, cereal, toilet roll, laundry detergent and other ‘cupboard essentials’.

And as an extra hook, customers will be given a £5 voucher when spending £40 or more in store this week, redeemable off their next £40 shop.

The promotion will run in conjunction with the Asda 10% price guarantee, which promises to beat Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose on price by 10% – or give you the difference back in shopping vouchers.

Asda £5 ‘thank you’

The store’s £5-off bonus is available when you spend £40 or more in a shop or online between 17 October and 23 October (your basket must contain at least eight different grocery items).

You’ll receive a £5 voucher when you visit the Asda Price Guarantee website between 18 and 30 October and enter the details from your receipt. The voucher is redeemable on your next £40 shop, but you’ll need to use it quickly – it’s only valid between 18 and 30 October in stores, or 20 and 30 October if you’re shopping online.

Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons offers

The move comes hot on the heels of Tesco’s ‘Big Price Drop‘ promotion, which similarly claims to slash the price of 3,000 everyday products. When we asked more than 1,000 Which? Conversation readers whether the scheme would help them to save money, 44% said they thought it was just a PR stunt.

Sainsbury’s, meanwhile, hit back with its own ‘Brand Match’ promotion. Pricing technology at the till automatically compares the cost of branded items in your £20 shopping basket to those in Asda and Tesco, offering a coupon for the difference if either store is cheaper.

Morrisons has also got in on the act by launching ‘Morrisons Millions’ – a free cash giveaway where each store will give away £100 to three shoppers every day between 17 and 30 October. Customers need to check their receipt number on the Morrisons website the day after their shop to see if they’re a winner.
