‘Hassle-free’ loft insulation comes at a price

Free insulation deals beat Eon scheme

A man installing loft insulation

Loft insulation can save you up to £250 a year and pay back in less than two years

Eon says its new loft insulation scheme will make saving energy ‘hassle-free’, but you can get cheaper insulation deals elsewhere.

Eon today launched Love Your Loft, a scheme which aims to make it easier for people to insulate their loft by offering a clearance, insulation and floor-boarding service in one.

However, the service starts at £349 – and consumers can already claim free loft insulation through a government scheme to reduce carbon emissions. See our guide to free insulation deals for details.

Loft insulation benefits

Insulating your home can cut your energy bills by up to £175 a year. Insulation keeps heat in during the winter and excess heat out during the summer, but not every house is effectively insulated.

Eon’s new insulation scheme has been launched as a ‘hassle-free’ package that includes loft clearance, the laying of insulation, and floorboard fittings.

However, Eon will only clear up to three cubic metres of items and five square metres of flooring, and some lofts may require more flooring or clearance than this.

Which? home editor Natalie Hitchins said: ‘While we welcome Eon’s efforts to encourage more people to insulate their loft, we would still suggest consumers take advantage of free insulation deals.

‘With the Eon deal, it would take at least two years to recoup the costs, but if you clear your loft yourself and get free insulation you could start saving today.’

Eon said that it launched the scheme after finding that a quarter of consumers had ruled out loft insulation as being too messy or difficult, or would result in more clutter. The firm added that it would responsibly dispose of waste or recycle items with a charity.
