New York has been rated the world’s best destination for a shopping holiday by a panel of Which? experts, receiving an expert score of 76%.
The iconic shopping destination beat off competition from Tokyo, Milan and Dubai among others, when compared against 33 different criteria. Couture capital Paris came second with 75%, and in third place was Hong Kong with 74%. The full results appear in the November issue of Which? Travel.
The city has worked tirelessly to get back on track in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and tomorrow readies itself for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day in New York’s calendar, where shops traditionally offer massive discounts.
Shopping destinations rated
Which? Travel’s expert panel was made up of Joanna McGinn – global expert for a trend forecasting agency, Carol Southall – retail tourism lecturer, and travel writer Jane Egginton.
They debated the range of retailers and types of shopping experience, the products themselves, the likelihood of finding a bargain, convenience and accessibility and the holiday appeal of the destination.
Great shopping abroad
While the exchange rate may not be as favourable as it once was, New York continues to attract shoppers for its bargain electronics, affordable casual fashion, ultra-hip boutiques and world famous department stores. Bear in mind there are limits on what you can bring into the UK.
New York is also the quintessential Christmas shopping destination, with impressive window displays and seasonal markets, and many of the best holiday companies offer Christmas Shopping packages at this time of year.
