Which? reveals top guidebook brands

DK Eyewitness and Bradt Travel Guides rated top

DK Eyewitness and Bradt Travel Guides come out on top in a poll of over 2,500 Which? members to find the best guidebook brands for country, regional and city guides.

As many of us start thinking about our holidays for the year ahead, a Which? guidebook survey reveals the top brands to accompany travellers on their next trip.

Guidebooks for 2013 holidays

Bradt Travel Guides head the list for country guidebooks with a customer score of 75%, with guidebooks from DK Eyewitness close behind on 73%. Rough Guides take the final top three place with a customer score of 65%.

DK Eyewitness leads the way for city breaks guidebooks with a customer score of 77%. Second spot is shared by Rough Guides, Insight Guides and Lonely Planet, all with a customer score of 66%.

Despite being the most used guidebook brand among those surveyed, Lonely Planet failed to top the table in any of the city, regional or country guidebook categories.

Print guidebooks still favoured

The new research also shows that despite the growing trend in digital books, printed guidebooks remain the number one choice when it comes to travel.

Nearly six in ten (59%) people surveyed had bought a printed guidebook in the previous year, while fewer than one in ten had downloaded a travel app (8%) or bought a digital guidebook (6%).

Ratings for guidebook brands

To produce customer scores for each guidebook brand, we asked Which? members how satisfied they were with the overall guidebook and how likely they were to recommend it to a friend.

Each guidebook was rated on ease of finding information, up-to-date information, providing practical help for the holiday, layout of information, pictures, quality of maps and value for money.

Which? members can see the full country, regional and city guidebooks results online, including customer scores for Lonely Planet, Rough Guides and Michelin Guides.
