After months of speculation, Apple has confirmed the release of a ‘cheap’ iPhone 5C and an update to the existing iPhone 5, the iPhone 5S.
Available in an array of five bright colours and with a plastic case the iPhone 5C has finally arrived. But while the launch of a cheaper iPhone marks a departure for Apple from its premium-only product approach, the new iPhone 5C may not be cheap enough for everyone.
Cheap iPhone 5C is not that cheap
The iPhone 5C will cost $99 (£63) for 16GB or $199 (£127) for the 32GB version upfront, on a two year wireless contract, which will disappoint those who expected a budget-friendly cheap iPhone. While much will depend on what tariffs those upfront prices are available on – do you need a £21 a month contract or a £41 a month contract? – this isn’t a budget handset. Instead it will replace the iPhone 5 which Apple has now pulled from sale.
Features wise the iPhone 5C is similar to the current iPhone 5 with a 4-inch retina display and powerful A6 processor. The 5C can claim a slightly larger capacity battery and an improved front facing camera.
What it doesn’t have is an aluminum body, which has made way for plastic to keep the cost of the phone down. The plastic case comes in a selection of five colours; green, grey, blue, peach, and yellow,

New iPhone 5S – an update not a revolution
The new iPhone 5S is an update to Apple’s current flagship handset the iPhone 5. There is no wholesale redesign and no grand new features, instead many of the things that matter on a phone have been improved.
Apple is claiming the first 64-bit processor inside a phone with their A7 processor and that this will make the phone twice as fast as the current iPhone 5. Everything you do on the phone should certainly feel fast and smooth but while graphic heavy games may benefit from the improved 64-bit system it’s unlikely there will be noticeable difference in everyday tasks like web browsing or typing in notes.
There is also an update to the battery with 10 hours of 3G talk time, compared to the nine hours our tests found on the iPhone 5, and a camera with bigger pixels and added flash for better pictures.
