As the nights draw in and we brace ourselves for the chilly months ahead, many of us are tempted to jet off in search of some holiday sun. Which? Travel picks ten frost-free holiday destinations for a winter break.
The destinations chosen are some of the most visited from the UK and offer warmer autumn and winter temperatures for sightseeing and even sunbathing. Find out which tour operators and agents Which? recommends to travel with in our annual holiday companies survey.
Sunshine destinations up to five hours away
Flight time: 2hr 50min. Choose between large year-round resorts such as Vilamoura and Albufeira or traditional fishing villages such as Olhos d’Agua, where some hotels remain open year round.
Flight time: 3hr 10min. Resorts with year-round hotels include St Julian’s and Mellieha Bay.
Flight time: 3hr 45min. Most winter package hotels are just outside capital Funchal. Others are near Caniço on the south-east coast.
Flight time: 4hr 20min. This clutch of Spanish islands off the African coast offers warm seas year round, as well as fun-packed resorts and volcanic scenery.
Flight time: 4hr 25min. Roman mosaics and the Tombs of the Kings are on show in Paphos. Inland the Troodos mountains have village vineyards and even a skiing base at the top of Mount Olympus.
Sunshine destinations up to nine hours away
Flight time: 7hr. Dubai has excellent shopping and in winter the heat is not oppressive as it can be in summer. Luxury hotels line the eight-mile stretch of Jumeirah Beach.
Flight time: 8hr 50min. Most low-key resorts sit along the calmer west and south coasts, with watersports aplenty.
Sunshine destinations up to 12 hours away
Flight time: 9hr 55min. The largest Caribbean island, known for its cigars, has many beach resorts, including Varadero which has more than six miles of beach.
Flight time: 10hr. Orlando with its array of theme parks is the prime target for British families, but the west and east coasts offer a more relaxing stay.
Flight time: 10hr 15min. The biggest resort is buzzing Montego Bay with its gently shelving beaches. Negril on the west coast is quieter.
