Which? reveals 10 new Best Buy cameras

Canon, Panasonic or Samsung - which comes out top?

Our latest lab tests of 16 new cameras, including DSLRs, compact cameras, waterproof models and compact system cameras, have revealed 10 new Best Buys.

Among them we found two Best Buys for under £200 and the best budget DSLR we’ve ever seen. This camera offers top-quality photography in an easy-to-use package for under £450 and gives far more expensive models a run for their money.

There were also several lower-scoring cameras that were disappointing, with poor picture quality or low ratings for ease of use – read our camera reviews to find out which models to avoid, see our latest results in full and find Best Buy models to suit all budgets.

Digital camera test findings

Which? cameras expert Dave Holes said: ‘We’ve seen some really interesting cameras in our latest batch with some real surprises. Our lab tests have shown that price is no guarantee of quality and that there are some real bargains out there if you know where to look.

‘There are also some disappointing models that can’t deliver decent shots, particularly in difficult, poor-light conditions. The great thing about about Which? testing is that it really challenges the cameras in all conditions – if we make a model a Best Buy you know you’re getting a camera that won’t disappoint.’

How we test digital cameras

We test everything from cheap point-and-shoot models to top-of-the-range digital SLRs from brands including Canon, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony, so you can find something to suit you.

Each camera faces a barrage of technical tests, as well as being subjected to the discerning eyes of our camera experts.

Our tests are designed to answer questions such as:

  • What’s the picture quality like in a variety of situations?
  • How well does it deal with low-light conditions?
  • How quick is it to power up and take shots?
  • What’s it like to use on a day-to-day basis?

Each review includes our verdict on whether or not the camera is worth parting with your hard-earned cash for. Each camera goes through exactly the same tests in our lab, so you can directly compare their strengths and weaknesses.
