Maxi-Cosi has just launched the Maxi-Cosi 2waypearl, which is the first child car seat in Europe that complies with the new i-Size child car seat regulations.
i-Size is a new regulation which aims to make child car seats safer by making the buying and fitting process for parents easier. You will no longer need to guess whether a child car seat will fit in your car, as if the car seat is i-Size approved then it will fit in any i-Size approved car, and both should have clear labelling to show this.
The i-Size rules will be running alongside current child car seat regulations, with various changes being phased in, in three stages between 2013 and 2018.

i-Size child car seats
The effects of the new i-Size child car seat regulations will include:
- Choosing a seat will be based on height rather than weight – this aims to make it easier for parents to know when to move their child up to the next car seat group, which can be dangerous if done too soon.
- All seats will be fitted with Isofix – i-Size requires Isofix fitting (where you simply ‘plug in’ the child car seat to mounting points in your car), which means that fitting a child car seat with a seat belt will become a thing of the past, therefore avoiding child car seats being fitted incorrectly.
- Retailers will give more consistent buying and fitting messages – the i-Size regulations aim to make child car seat selling messages consistent, helping parents navigate the currently confusing process. In addition, all cars and seats that are i-Size compliant will have clear i-Size labelling.
- Children will be kept rearward facing until at least 15 months – babies’ heads are a quarter of their total body length, and their bones and muscles are weaker than adults. Keeping a child rearward facing for as long as possible will help protect their heads and neck from the force of a crash.
- Car seats will face tougher tests – as well as the standard front impact test child car seats currently have to go through to meet UK standards, all new i-Size child car seats must go through a side impact, too.

The Maxi-Cosi 2waypearl car seat is an extended rearward-facing child car seat for children up to age four, or around 105cm, and fits onto an Isofix base.
The base allows it to be turned forward facing from 15 months, and recline options allow you to recline your child when facing either way.

Maxi-Cosi says the 2waypearl is available now in limited stores and will be widely available from January 2014, for around £200 for the seat and £175 for the base.
