Fitting a baby car seat

You can buy the safest child car seat in the world, but if it hasn’t been installed correctly it can still fail to protect your child in the event of a crash.

We’ve just produced a downloadable checklist illustrating 10 important car seat checks which you can print out and take to your car, or – if you are buying a new seat – to the shop to check that you (or the shop assistant) have installed your new car seat safely and correctly.

How Which? tests baby car seats

When we test baby car seats, we subject them to far stricter safety tests than required by UK law. We use a real car and state-of-the-art crash dummies to measure how well a car seat protects a child in a 40mph head-on collision, as well as a side impact at 17.5mph.

We also check how easy the seat is to install and adjust in a range of cars, looking at whether there’s any difference between the seat’s Isofix or belted modes.

This means you can rest assured that our Best Buy baby car seats really are the safest – and easiest to use – on the market.
