Cheap, smart-TV, 3D and 4K Blu-ray players tested

The latest Blu-ray player test results are in, including our expert verdict on the Sony BDP-S7200 and Toshiba BDX5500. These premium models offer the latest in picture quality and features, but are they Best Buys and better than sub-£100 models?

We’ve tested a variety of models, including those that offer smart-TV apps, such as BBC iPlayer and Netflix, and some that can also play Blu-rays in 3D and 4K quality. Our tests assess picture and sound quality, ease of use, features and speed, but only the most impressive Blu-ray players are awarded our Best Buy rating – and the latest tests reveal some that are poor value for money.

Sony BDP-S7200 vs BDP-S6200 and Samsung, Panasonic and Toshiba 4K Blu-ray players

As 4K (Ultra-HD) TVs have made their way into the shops, so too have ‘4K’ Blu-ray players. ‘4K discs’ aren’t yet available, but these players can upscale Blu-ray discs to display on a 4K TV at four times the quality of Full-HD (1080p). In our latest batch, we’ve tested the Sony BDP-S7200 and Toshiba BDX5500 to see how they compare with models we’ve tested previously, including the Samsung BD-H6500, Panasonic DMP-BDT460 and Sony BDP-S6200.

But we don’t just put 4K to the test – as with the non-4K Blu-ray players we’ve tested, we put them through their paces for DVD and Blu-ray picture quality, using the BBC’s ‘Natural World’ and blockbusters ‘Gravity’ and ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’.

So does Sony’s flagship beat its rivals and standard non-4K Blu-ray players? Read our Sony BDP-S7200 review to find out.
