Food in a fridge freezer

Which? reviews Bosch, Indesit and Hotpoint fridge freezers in latest tests

We’ve tested nine of the latest mid-range and cheap fridge freezers to see which chill and freeze food to perfection. Plus, we’ve also reviewed one of newcomer brand Hitachi’s first fridge freezers to hit UK shops.

Our latest tests have uncovered fridge freezers that chill and freeze fast, helping to lock nutrients inside your food and extend the shelf-life of your groceries.

But we’ve also unearthed a fridge freezer that is so sluggish at cooling it’ll take days for your food to chill down.

Cheap fridge freezer reviews

On a budget? The basic and compact Fridgemaster MC5196 isn’t frost-free but it costs just £219 and is one of the cheapest fridge freezers you can buy.

The 55cm-wide frost-free Indesit CTAA55NF offers plenty of chilling space for £275, while the £290 Hotpoint FFAA52K has a large four-drawer freezer which won’t ice up.

If you’ve more to spend, the Hitachi R-B360ERU4V is loaded with premium features yet is a reasonably-priced £500. It has separate thermostats for more accurate fridge and freezer temperatures, a digital display and a separate chiller compartment for keeping meat and fish extra cool.

Are cheap fridge freezers worth the money?

Which? fridge freezer expert Jess O’Leary says: ‘some of the cheap fridge freezers we see in our test lab are undeniably dreadful, but it is possible to buy a basic, budget model that excels at the essentials: chilling and freezing fast and keeping food safely cooled 24/7.

‘Which? members can use our compare features and prices tool to sort reviews by price and see which cheap fridge freezers shine in our tests.’
