Thane’s original X5 steam mop is one of the most popular steam mops around, so we’ve taken the new premium version – the Thane H2O HD – for a spin to see whether it’s worth its £130 price tag.
The Thane H2O HD is at the higher end of the typical steam mop price range, but in return you get an impressive-sounding range of attachments for cleaning carpets, windows and other household surfaces, as well as hard floors.
We asked one of our researchers to try it out at home on an eclectic mix of spring cleaning tasks – read our full Thane H2O HD steam cleaner first look review to find out how it fared.
UPDATE: This mop has now been fully tested at the Which? test lab. Head to our review of the Thane H2O HD steam mop to find out if it cleaned up.
Thane H2O HD steam mop
As with the H2O X5, this steam mop is a two-in-one mop that also comes with a detachable handheld unit for cleaning hard-to-reach places, surfaces and fabric. It has a triangular floor head for cleaning in corners, and three steam settings.
Unlike the H2O X5, the H2O HD water tank has a built-in filter and is removable, which should make refilling it from the tap a bit easier.
This premium version also has a quick release button for taking out the handheld unit, a foldable handle for easy storage, and a larger mop head than the H2O X5.
In action, the H2O X5 felt light to manoeuvre and its not-insignificant weight seemed well balanced. Our Thane H2O HD review reveals full details of whether or not it manages to pair this manoeuvrability with decent cleaning power.

We’ll be putting the H2O X5 through our full lab tests later in 2015, to see if it has got what it takes to join the ranks of our recommended steam mop Best Buys.
Our scientific tests pit steam mops against a range of tricky stains on a host of different surfaces including tiles, upholstery, glass and ovens, to see how they tackle built-up grime and if they give a smudge-free finish.
Some steam cleaners lose power over time, so we assess the durability of each cleaner by using it 30 times and measuring the steam output throughout.
We’ve tested the most popular models from Shark, Black and Decker, Bissell and Vax, so we can tell you the best to invest in.
