This month, our expert test team has been impressed by an excellent ebook reader, a wonderful wireless speaker and a fantastic (and affordable) 4K TV.

Read on for details of the best tech we’ve reviewed in August, so you’re right up to speed the next time you go shopping.

Best Buy tech – August 2015

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (2015) – 88%

The latest Kindle Paperwhite takes all that was good in the 2013 Kindle Paperwhite and adds the much sharper 300ppi display from the Kindle Voyage – Amazon’s premium e-reader.

This means the new Paperwhite has a 6-inch screen with double the resolution of its predecessor and, at £110, still costs £60 less than the Kindle Voyager despite having the same display. We found the latest Kindle Paperwhite easy to use and the Amazon ebook store counts among the cheapest and best stocked you could hope to visit.

At just a shade over 200g the new Paperwhite is lightweight too, but it’s the high-resolution display that really steals the show here, with sharp, clear text that’s easy to read even in direct light. Owners of the previous Paperwhite won’t gain too much from upgrading, but anyone looking for a Kindle for the first time should look no further.

Cambridge Audio G2 – 81%

This Best Buy speaker sounds fantastic and is much louder than you would expect for a speaker this small. There’s a good balance between the bass, mid-range and treble and it delivers crisp, clear vocals.

It looks great too and has a very impressive battery life – we managed to eke out 14.5 hours of listening over a Bluetooth connection. Other bonus features include a built-in microphone that allows you to make hands-free calls, plus a USB port for charging your mobile device, be it a tablet or phone.

If you’re looking for a small but stylish speaker that offers great sound at a reasonable price, the Cambridge Audio G2 is definitely well worth considering at a smidge under £100.

Samsung UE40JU6400 4K TV – 73%

The UE40JU6400 has a 40-inch screen that’s capable of displaying super-sharp 4K, ‘UltraHD’ pictures with four times the detail of regular HD.

The TV excels across almost every type of programme you’ll want to watch on it. Use it to view 4K content and you’ll enjoy razor-sharp pictures with sumptuous, natural colours and steady contrast levels. HD-quality pictures also look great, with the TV doing a sound job of upscaling them to 4K resolution.

Combine the excellent image quality with useful smart TV features such as web browsing and access to on-demand content via services such as Netflix, plus a healthy number of HDMI and AV sockets, and you’re left with a TV that matches the performance of many sets costing many hundreds of pounds more. For its sub-£600 price tag, the Samsung UE40JU6400 really can’t be faulted.
