Is the Aldi Gardenline petrol lawn mower any good?

Is the new Aldi petrol lawn mower a bargain for thrifty gardeners?

Is the Aldi Gardenline petrol lawn mower any good?

Aldi is selling a petrol lawn mower for just £179.99, but can you trust such a cheap lawn mower to give a good cut?

Although we don’t normally test Aldi lawn mowers because they’re only available for a short time, we did manage to get our hands on the Aldi Gardenline SP GPMX246l when it was briefly on sale in 2017. Our lawn mowers expert tried it out at home so we could bring you our first impressions.

Aldi Gardenline petrol lawn mower

It is unusual for a self-propelled mower – one that moves forward without needing you to push it – to cost as little at £180, particularly when its engine is manufactured by well-respected brand Briggs & Stratton. Retail prices tend to start at £220 and go up to £1,250 for professional machines.

The 46cm width of the cutting blade should make it suitable for medium to large gardens of 150sq.m or more. The mower is in Aldi stores or can be ordered online from the Aldi website for home delivery, with a £4 delivery charge.

When our lawn mowers expert tried it out at home she was impressed with the way that the mower filled the grass collection box, taking full advantage of its large 60-litre capacity.

Can you trust Aldi and Lidl gardening products?

As Lidl and Aldi gardening special offers sell out quickly, we don’t send them off for full lab testing and they don’t appear in our reliability surveys. So it can be hard to know what to expect before you get them home.

To get an overview of the situation, we’ve had a good look at Aldi and Lidl’s tools and plants, and compared them with similar products from a range of retailers. Our results were pretty mixed, so it is worth reading the full report on cheap Aldi and Lidl garden products.
