The ever-popular Renault Clio starts from only £11,900. In our round-up of our latest reviews, it’s joined by similar-size crossovers – the Renault Captur and Fiat 500X, both from around £14,500. All aim to offer you comfortable, practical driving in a stylish package.

At mid-range prices, there’s the Skoda Octavia Estate from £16,563. Plus the seven-seater VW Tiguan Allspace which, at £27,789, gives you even more space.

For those wanting luxury, the finely decked-out Land Rover Velar starts from an expensive £42,872.

Fiat 500X

It may look similar to the iconic Fiat 500 city car, but the 500X compact crossover actually shares its platform with the larger Fiat 500L compact MPV. Prices start from £14,789.

The emphasis is on style, with Fiat giving you plenty of options to customise the car’s design inside and out to make it the ideal family car for you.

For the outside look of the 500X, you get to choose between ‘Urban’ and ‘Cross’. The Cross has additional body cladding for a more purposeful look, plus it gives you additional options for more powerful engines and four-wheel drive.

Skoda Octavia Estate

Up in the next price bracket is the Skoda Octavia Estate, starting at around £16,563. The Octavia’s now more upmarket than it used to be, with the Skoda Rapid now occupying the budget slot in Skoda’s range.

Skoda claims it has enormous space for luggage and, despite its size, impressive fuel economy.

A facelift in 2016 gave the Octovia Estate and the large Octavia hatchback styling tweaks and an updated range of equipment. This included a new 9.2-inch touchscreen coming as standard on the range-topping Laurin and Klement trim.

Renault Captur

Coming in at a similar price to the Fiat 500X is the popular Renault Captur, from £14,170. Based on the Renault Clio, it looks like a crossover but its compact size promises to be suitable for city driving.

In 2017 the Captur received a mid-life refresh, with updated front-end styling and LED headlights, bringing the design in line with the also popular Renault Kadjar large SUV.

The interior has seen slight improvements as well, with more soft-touch plastics and a more generous standard specification overall.

Renault Clio

The fourth-generation of the Renault Clio firm family favourite starts at only £11,900, making it one of the cheapest big-brand popular cars. It adopted eye-catching voluptuous styling when it originally launched in 2012, and received a mid-life update in 2016.

This latest update brought tweaks to the exterior styling, including LED headlights, a redesigned front grille and rear bumper. This made it look more like the larger Renault Megane hatchback.

VW Tiguan Allspace

The VW Tiguan Allspace is one of the more expensive crossovers available, coming in at around £27,789. So is it worth the extra cost?

The Allspace is the seven-seat variant of the popular Volkswagen Tiguan crossover, and VW sells it as a more practical alternative for larger families.

It costs over £6,000 more than the standard Tiguan model, and is 21.5cm longer. VW’s used this extra space to squeeze in two extra seats, which fold flat into the boot floor when not in use.

This makes it a genuine crossover rival to a large MPV, with passenger space having grown considerably as well.

Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The Range Rover Velar is a full-size coupé-style family off-roader that’s well into luxury car territory. It’s the latest and most striking looking car in Land Rover’s range and gives proper 4×4 fans the chance to spoil themselves.

Prices start from £42,872, and you’ll want to pay more for some of the extras as well.

This is because the entry-level Velar is limited to the lesser-powered 2.0-litre diesel and, surprisingly, lacks a sat nav as standard. Which isn’t what you’d expect at this high-end price.

In fact, you’d need to splash out around £10,000 extra on the mid-range SE (prices start from £52,675) and above to bag yourself a sat nav and more engine options.

For what Land Rover calls ‘socially conscious consumers’ (who buy massive Range Rovers), there’s an option of seats with cloth made from recycled materials. These are ‘premium textile seats with wool bland and suede cloth’.
