Food recall: frozen veg removed from UK supermarkets over listeria concerns

The Food Standards Agency warns of bacteria found in frozen food products

Concerns over potential listeria contamination have forced six UK supermarkets to recall a range of products with immediate effect.

Making up the list of supermarkets involved with the move are Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

It’s worth noting that Public Health England (PHE) have confirmed that there have been no confirmed cases of listeriosis linked to the frozen vegetable scandal since May 2018.

On average, around 160 laboratory-confirmed cases of listeriosis are reported to Public Health England each year. The health body confirmed that, provisionally, there have been 71 cases of listeriosis in England this year up to June 2018. But PHE said that this is in line with expected numbers.

It’s still important not to consume the affected products. Listeria can have serious negative effects on pregnant women, babies, people over the age of 65 and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include a high temperature of 38C or above; aches and pains; chills; feeling sick or vomiting or diarrhoea.

Listeria is capable of contaminating a wide range of foods such as cooked sliced meats, cured meats, smoked fish and pre-prepared sandwiches and salads.

What do I do if food I own or have eaten is recalled?

Don’t take the risk – if a food product is recalled, don’t eat or drink the product. Even though cooking is an important step in stemming the growth of harmful bacteria, and all frozen vegetables must be cooked before you eat them, it’s not worth taking the chance with the products listed above.

You can still claim a refund whether or not you’ve already eaten the product, though. If you are injured as a result of eating contaminated food, you have rights under the Consumer Protection Act. For more information, consult our guide: What do I do if food I own or have eaten is recalled?

The FSA describes symptoms caused by Listeria monocytogenes as ‘similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea’.

The FSA say that some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.
