Should you buy the Lidl 4-in-1 garden power tool?

Priced at just £129, it combines a grass trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer and pruner. But how well does it work?

Lidl is selling a petrol garden power tool that has four different uses and will be in stores from Sunday 30 June 2019. We took a first look to see whether it really can do everything it claims.

For gardeners with grass, shrubs, trees and hedges to maintain, it can be a costly business buying a tool for each use, so a multi-tool that can do it all is a tempting option. This Lidl Parkside multi-tool has a two-stroke petrol engine, so it should be powerful. Bear in mind that you’ll also need to buy a can of petrol and have somewhere safe to store it.

We’ve tried it out to find out how it compares with models from the big brands.

Which gardening tasks can it tackle?

The Parkside 4-in-1 Petrol Multi-Tool is designed to do four jobs:

Grass trimmer: This head comes ready-wound with line and has a cutting diameter of 43cm. New line is fed out with an automatic bump feed. It’s designed to cut long grass, although the petrol engine will make it too powerful to trim lawn edges easily.

Brushcutter: This head is a three-toothed steel blade that offers a cutting diameter of 23cm. It’s for cutting tougher material, such as weeds.

Hedge trimmer: This head can be angled from -90 degrees to 75 degrees, so you can adjust it for the hedge you’re cutting. The long pole means you can cut up to 3.5m from the ground, making it suitable even for tall hedges.

Pruner: This head can cut branches up to 26cm in diameter, so it can be used for pruning trees and shrubs.

Are there other multi-tools I should consider?

There are other long-length multi-tools on the market, such as the Mitox 26MT-SP, which is a petrol-powered tool with a hedge trimmer, grass trimmer and chainsaw pole pruner.

Alternatively, you could try a cordless range of power tools that share the same battery to reduce costs, such as the Ozito Power X Change 18V Pole Hedge Trimmer, Ryobi One+ OPT1845 hedge trimmer and Stihl HS 56 hedge trimmer.
