If you’re planning a bank holiday escape, the cheapest time to book your flight is around two months and three weeks in advance, according to Which? Travel research.
By analysing two years of flight-booking data from Skyscanner, researchers have predicted that this week – and today in particular, June 3 – is best to bag a bargain on a late August airfare.
Flight prices fluctuate with demand, meaning it’s impossible to give a definitive answer on how far in advance you should book to always get the lowest price.
However, by crunching 2017 and 2018 data for thousands of return economy flights worldwide, we were able to find the booking sweet spots for popular holiday periods.
Hurry deals, early-bird deals and discount vouchers: Which? Travel is always investigating how to get the best price on your holiday. Find out more about Which? Travel
Bag a bank holiday bargain
Which? looked at the cost of flights from the UK to a variety of worldwide destinations to help sun-seekers find a bank holiday bargain. It’s not an exact science, as the best time to book does alter year on year, but the cheapest periods were roughly the same.
If you book almost three months before the long weekend, flights should be 8% cheaper on average than at any other time.
Although we’ve pinpointed 3 June as the best day, you may secure a late August deal for a week or two afterwards, too.
Our data found that while Sundays are typically the most expensive day to travel, they are the cheapest day to book (Wednesdays are priciest). But, how far in advance you book is more important than the day of the week when it comes to finding the best fare.

Where to go for August bank holiday
Not sure where to take your next holiday? We asked thousands of Which? members to rate the European cities they had visited in the last year.
Krakow and Valencia were the joint winners in our survey – each receiving a city score of 91%.
Krakow received the maximum five stars for the quality of its accommodation, food and drink and cultural sites and tourist attractions. It was also the only city to clinch full marks for value for money. Valencia received the highest praise for its accommodation and ease of getting around.
Budapest, Bologna, Berlin and Seville were other favourites to make it into our top 10.
