One in three customers of tour operators RSD, Wendy Wu Tours and Jules Verne encountered a problem with their holiday, according to Which? Travel’s annual holiday companies survey.
Holidaymakers are more likely to experience issues on an escorted tour than on any other type of trip, with some reporting that their last escorted tour featured terrible tour guides, unsatisfactory accommodation, or inedible food.
But the chances of encountering an issue, or that issue not being successfully resolved, are far higher if you choose to travel with the wrong company. And this is just one consideration when you’re choosing an escorted tour. Others elements, such as customer service and value for money, are evaluated in the full results of our survey.

Problems on your escorted holiday
One in five holidaymakers told Which? Travel they had encountered an issue, based on 8,056 holiday experiences.
While some of the complaints – such as delays or missed transfers – could happen on any holiday, others were more concerning.
A common problem with RSD Travel, the cultural tour operator that sells trips in co-operation with national newspapers, was that its tours were ‘overshadowed by trips to carpet, leather and other factories where there was pressure to buy’.
According to one unhappy customer, this meant less sightseeing and more hanging around for sales.
Not all of the holiday companies in the survey proved to be problematic.
Customers who travelled with walking, cycling and adventure companies Exodus and HF Holidays reported relatively few issues.
Both companies are also Which? Recommended Providers. Find out which other travel agents and tour operators we recommend.
