The Skoda Fabia is a cleanly-styled, well-built supermini available as a five-door hatchback or a mini-estate. Similar to the Volkswagen Polo, a close relation, it is more utility oriented, with practical packaging and a no-nonsense image. The second-generation models (from 2007) are notably bigger and more sophisticated.

Every derivative offers decent value for money and scores well for reliability, from the hot hatch Skoda Fabia vRS to the economy-oriented Greenline models. It's not quite as cheap as you'd think, however.

Its looks may not set your pulse racing, but the Skoda Fabia is well-built and pleasant to drive, thanks to good ride quality and precise steering. The early models are still quite dear - even 10-year old cars with high mileage are £1000-plus - and there are cheaper secondhand superminis, but the price reflects the Fabia's popularity and owners' loyalty.
