Each dock has been specifically designed to work with an iPod. However, the inclusion of a 3.5mm jack means any portable device can be attached.
Charges newer iPods and iPhones
Some older speaker docks will not charge the newest generations of the iPod and iPhone, though they will play them.

Useful if you want to feed through video content to a larger display, such as your TV.
