Our testing reveals an electric toothbrush which offers great results without costing the earth, while another provides little beyond a lighter wallet

This week it’s toothbrush vs toothbrush: oscillating head taking on rotating head. Which will brush up best?

On paper, they don't seem too different, but one costs a lot more while providing less. Meanwhile, the other is a no-fuss Great Value model you can grab at your local Superdrug.

Great Value: Superdrug ProCare Advanced Clean (68%)

Superdrug ProCare Advanced Clean

We like: Good at removing plaque

We don't like: Battery won't last as long as some

This own-brand option from Superdrug proves you don't need to splash out hundreds on a top-of-the-range toothbrush to get a quality clean.

It might not have all the bells and whistles of pricier alternatives – it has just one cleaning mode while others we've tested have up to seven – but it's comfortable to use and does the basics very well.

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige (64%)

Average price in the past six months: £340 | Cheapest price in the past six months: £188

Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige

We like: The companion app

We don't like: Very expensive

Despite costing at least around £200, this Philips toothbrush leaves much to be desired.

It does have a good battery life and is comfortable to hold, but for the price, we expected the plaque removal to be better, especially when compared with far cheaper models.

Our expert says

Manca Virant, Which?

'We’ve put all types of electric toothbrushes through their paces, from budget-friendly picks under £20 to premium models costing up to £300. While it’s easy to assume a higher price means a superior clean, our testing shows that isn’t always true.

'The Superdrug ProCare Advanced Clean outperformed many pricier alternatives. It impressed us with solid cleaning performance and earned our Great Value recommendation for being kind on your wallet, too.

'In comparison, the Philips Sonicare 9900 Prestige left us underwhelmed despite its premium price.'
