Our  survey found problems with delays and cancellations came out as top in a list of people's holiday gripes.

If you've had problems with a flight, read on to see if you're entitled to a refund or compensation.

Whether or not you're entitled to compensation for delayed flights depends on the reason for your delay.

EU or not EU?

If you're flying from an EU airport (on any airline) or from a non-EU country into an EU airport on an EU-based airline, then you are protected by the Denied Boarding Regulation.

But if you're travelling with a non-EU based airline flying to and from a non-EU destination, the airline doesn't have the same responsibility.

If your flight is cancelled, you may be able to claim compensation and get a refund under the Denied Boarding Regulation.

The amount of compensation you're entitled to depends on how far you were going to fly and if any alternative flights were offered to you by the airline.

If you miss a flight and it’s the airline’s fault, then they are required to help but if it's your own fault, then you probably won't be entitled to anything.

Baggage is one of the biggest areas of complaint for air passengers. Airlines are responsible for the bags they allow you to check in but their responsibility is limited.
