Best and worst used superminis for reliability

Which? reveals the most reliable used superminis
Honda Jazz

A growing number of people are downsizing to a supermini, with many avoiding initial depreciation (loss in value) by buying second-hand. This means reliability is right at the top of the priority list.

According to the latest Which? Car Survey, the most reliable used superminis are Japanese. The top five scoring models come from manufacturers such as Mazda, Mitsubishi and Toyota. However it’s Honda that comes out top with the practical Jazz.

Most reliable used supermini: Honda Jazz (08-)

The popular and highly accomplished Honda Jazz is now in its second generation. It has a phenomenally flexible cabin and a huge boot as well. Owners love the Jazz too – not only did they rate it as the most reliable used supermini, it is also one of the top models for owner satisfaction.

Repair costs are kept to a minimum – the annual average cost of all Jazz owners who completed our survey was just £23.

Least reliable used supermini: Fiat Punto (99-06)

Fiat Punto

Although the Fiat Punto drives and handles well, it can’t keep up with the competition when it comes to reliability. It is the least 4-8-year-old reliable supermini according to the 2012 Which? Car Survey.

Problems with the exhaust system, steering and battery are relatively common, and these drive the average annual repair cost up to £72.

The 2006-2010 Punto doesn’t fair much better for reliability, and its annual average repair cost is nearly double at £142.
