Dishwashers: How to buy
At home
Think about what size you need – and what will fit in your kitchen!
It can pay dividends to have a think about what you want from a dishwasher before you hit the shops.
Size
Think realistically about whether you should choose a full-sized or slimline model, or if you'd prefer your dishwasher to be freestanding or built-in.
If you live alone, for example, there's not much point having a full-sized dishwasher with enough space for 12-15 place settings!
Use the table in the 'Features explained' section to find the right size for your needs.
Water pressure
If you live somewhere that isn't connected to the mains water supply then you might have problems maintaining enough water pressure to run a dishwasher. You can install a pump or a header tank, but we recommend you consult a plumber to avoid disappointment and unnecessary cost.
Environmental issues
Wait until your dishwasher's full before you run it
Whether you have a full sized or compact machine, try to make sure it’s full when you run it, as this is the most energy-efficient way to use your dishwasher .
Full-sized freestanding dishwashers can hold up to 14 place settings - that’s an enormous 147 plates, bowls, cups, saucers, knives, forks and spoons. Avoid inefficient half-loads if you’re looking to do your bit for the planet.
Mobility issues
Make sure your machine is easy to use. Our Best Buys all have very good ease of use scores. This means they’re easy to program, the door is easy to open, they are easy to load and it’s easy to fill them with detergent.
In the shop
Don't be afraid to have a closer look at a dishwasher you're interested in buying. Look and feel are important to most people and this can be good way of deciding between two models.
Look at the controls
Some models will be unsuitable if you have sight or dexterity problems. Labels and buttons are sometimes small and cramped, making them hard to read and fiddly to operate.
If symbols are the only indication of different programs, make sure these are clearly understandable so that it's simple to use without referring to the manual.
Warranty
Warranties usually mean your dishwasher will be repaired free of charge for 12 or 24 months after it's been purchased. However, some manufacturers offer deals for a free five-year warranty, which is definitely worth looking out for. Make sure the deal covers both replacement parts and labour for repairs.
Buying on a budget
Don’t make the mistake of seeing a cheap price and thinking you’ll get a bargain – inexpensive machines haven’t performed well in our tests recently. Our Best Buys are from the middle to top end of the market, so why not wait for the sales and bag your self a Best Buy bargain then?
Delivery
Delivery and installation usually costs between £20 to £30 extra, but can be useful if you don't want to plumb in a model yourself. Some retailers offer free delivery and installation, or offer to take away an old appliance for a small fee – usually around £15. Ask staff for details.
Track down a model
Even the largest retailers only have limited stocks on display at the moment. Here’s how to find the model you want if you can't find it at your local store.
- Ordering - Many retailers, such as John Lewis and Currys, will order an appliance for you. It’s always worth asking to see if a model can be transferred from another branch, or whether it’s available to buy from their online catalogue. If you order via John Lewisyou might be eligible for a free extended warranty.
- Go independent - Independent retailers are smaller stores not linked to any of the major electrical retailers. Independents normally pride themselves on being able to track down any model. The Euronics website is a good place to track down an independent electrical retailer in your area from.
- Contact a helpline - Many manufacturers, including Bosch, keep lists of dealers to help customers find the machines they are looking for. You can get this information through the customer care telephone line or on the company’s website.
