Two people sitting on camping chairs on a camping trip.

Summer is upon us and that calls for a top of the range camping chair. We put 10 camping chairs through their paces to find chairs that won’t leave you blown over by a gust of wind or with a sore back.

Among those we tested were a mixture of moon chairs and folding camping chairs from Regatta, Trespass and Vango. We tested them on everything from durability to ease of assembly and, most importantly, comfort.

Prices and availability last checked as of 3 August 2021.

How we tested

Comfort

An uncomfortable camping chair can ruin a camping trip. To find the most comfortable chair we had eight volunteers ranging from 8st 5lbs to 18st 3lbs in weight, and between 5ft 3in and 6ft 3in tall to sit on each chair and rate them.

Ease of assembly

A good camping chair should be quick and easy to put up and take down. We took each chair out of its bag, assembled it and then dissembled it again. We noted any issues we found and penalised bags that were overly tricky to work with.

Stability and ease of exiting

Nobody wants a wobbly chair that's easily blown over. For stability, we asked our volunteers to reach across their body to pick up an object on either side of the chair. And for exiting, we asked them simply to get out of the chair and note any issues they found.

Portability

Lugging a chair around is often the worst part of a camping trip or festival, along with carrying your tent around. We've penalised chairs with more bulk and weight so you know which chairs are the easiest to carry.

Durability

We ran a series of tests to test for different aspects of durability.

  • To see how fast drying the chairs are we sprayed them 40 times each with water from a spray bottle and left them for an hour. Chairs that were still damp to the touch were given a lower score.
  • To simulate long-term use, we assembled and dissembled each chair 50 times and noted any wear and tear that we found.
  • To see how tough the chairs are we dropped each one in its bag from waist height five times and then five more times while fully erected.

Four tips for buying the best camping chair

  1. Personal preference Think about what matters more to you: portability or comfort? We found in our testing that there seems to be a trade off between the two. The most comfortable chairs often were the least portable and vice versa.
  2. Ease of use If you're looking for ultimate ease of use, then we'd avoid the chairs that you have to construct yourself. Although the two we tested had magnetic poles to help you build them, they still take longer to put up than your standard folding chair.
  3. Accessories The quality of the camping chair bag is more important than you think. During our long-term use testing, it was clear that the wear and tear is likely to come from the bags ripping.
  4. Environment Even the best camping chair might not be suitable for all environments. Think about whether you'll be taking your chair to the beach, because unless the chair has specially designed flat feet, it will likely sink. To avoid this you can purchase a set of Chair Buddies, which attach to the feet and keep the chair stable.
