American Express offers a range of cashback, rewardlow rate and 0% purchase credit card deals.

The brand is perhaps most well-known for its cashback and reward-generating offers, which are among the most generous on the market.

How we calculate Amex's customer score and ratings

We pick credit cards to feature in Which? brand reviews based on the most popular brands searched for online.

Customer scores are based on an online survey of the public, which received  5,621 responses in total. They are calculated using a combination of overall satisfaction and the likelihood of recommending the provider to a friend. 

Star ratings for each category are scored independently of the customer score.

These surveys are carried out annually and customer scores are updated accordingly. Providers must receive a minimum sample size of 30 respondents to be included in our customer satisfaction tables.

Can I do an American Express balance transfer?


American Express credit cards don't currently come offer 0% balance transfers.

But if you’ve built up debt on an American Express credit, you can move the balance to another credit card provider with a 0% balance transfer deal.

Just be cautious about where you apply next to make sure they can facilitate a transfer. Sainsbury's Bank told Which? it isn't currently able to process balance transfers from some American Express cards, while Santander and M&S Bank told us they have special requirements.


Where are American Express credit cards accepted?


American Express credit cards aren’t as widely accepted by merchants in the UK as Visa or Mastercard.

Does American Express offer an eligibility check?


American Express has an eligibility checker that will perform a 'soft search' of your Experian credit file. This won’t impact your credit score.

You'll be able to see your likelihood of being approved before submitting an application.
