  • We welcome the Review. The move to digital banking services has brought benefits to many consumers, offering them greater ease and convenience, but some people still need access to alternative methods, such as branches.
  • It’s right that the impact on consumers of the huge numbers of bank branch closures that have occurred over recent times is being properly evaluated. The sheer scale of changes to the bank branch network is breathtaking.
  • Good progress has been made in meeting the government commitment to roll out 350 shared banking hubs by the end of the current Parliament. Consideration should now be given to expanding the number of hubs to address gaps in in-person banking services caused by the large number of bank branch closures.
  • More fundamentally, the continued provision of some level of in-person banking services should be put on a firmer, statutory footing.
