Chancellor's plans for boosting economic growth must not come at the expense of consumer protections, says Which?

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said: "The Chancellor is right to focus on ways to boost economic growth and productivity and while doing away with unnecessary bureaucracy will play a part, that mustn't come at the expense of weakened consumer protections. "To support economic growth, consumers will need the confidence to try innovative new products and services without the fear of being ripped off, trapped in a subscription or stung with higher prices after signing up to a service. "The government should reconsider plans to rush through the review of thousands of EU-derived laws by the end of the year and press ahead with ensuring consumer protections are fit for the digital age. The Digital Markets, Consumer and Competition Bill must include laws to prevent unfair business practices which leave the customer worse off and tackle the vice-like grip tech giants have in digital markets, which stop innovative businesses entering some markets leading to less choice and higher prices for consumers and businesses."
