Which? comments as minister says the Online Safety Act ‘not up for negotiation’ in US trade talks
Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:
"It's good to hear reassurances from ministers that the Online Safety Act is not up for negotiation in trade talks.
"This legislation plays a vital role in ensuring the UK has consumer rights and protections fit for the digital age. It has been subject to detailed debate and based on robust evidence and must not be diluted or bargained away in trade talks.
"The Online Safety Act will see search engines and social media firms finally held accountable for the flood of online scams consumers are exposed to every day on their platforms. Ensuring Ofcom has and can use the power to fine these companies if they fail to block scams is essential if the UK is going to tackle the epidemic of fraud we are facing."
