Which? comments on latest figures from ONS showing almost half of households are struggling to afford energy bills

Sue Davies, Which? Head of Food and Consumer Protection Policy, said:

"It's hugely concerning that many people are already struggling to pay their energy bills, even before prices go up again in the coming weeks. With the cost of the weekly food shop soaring and other essentials like fuel still at near-record levels, it's clear millions of people are facing a very tough winter.

"The government's Energy Price Guarantee plan will bring some relief to millions of households and ministers must now work with the industry to ensure the help promised gets to those who need it as soon as possible.

"Energy firms must have sufficient customer support in place to deal with a deluge of inquiries, while businesses in other essential sectors like food and telecoms must ensure they are making it easy for customers to find good-value products and scrap unfair charges and confusing pricing practices."
