Which? comments on the Public Accounts Committee's warning that the new online safety regime may disappoint the public without tangible changes
Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:
"Which?'s latest research revealing online platforms are still littered with scams ads shows why the Online Safety Act is so desperately needed, with the threat of multi-million pound fines acting as a deterrent to tech giants.
“Ofcom's powers to regulate online services are an essential protection for consumers in the fight against fraud. It's crucial that Ofcom comes up with robust codes of practice that force online platforms to quickly identify and take down fraudulent adverts on their platforms and is ready to hit those that break the rules with significant fines.
“It’s essential that there are no further delays and that Ofcom’s codes of practice deliver a real impact and protect consumers from online fraud. The government must make tackling fraud a national priority and appoint a fraud minister who can ensure there is a coordinated pushback against the epidemic of fraud gripping the UK."
