Which? responds as Citizens Advice expects surge in BNPL use to ease seasonal spending

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:

"In the midst of an unrelenting cost of living crisis, these latest Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) findings are worrying – particularly as Which? research shows that many BNPL users do not realise they are taking on debt or consider the prospect of missing payments, which can result in uncapped fees.

"Regulation of BNPL is desperately needed. The government has no excuse for kicking the can down the road and must ensure that consumers are given stronger safeguards to protect them and warn about the risks of using these types of schemes. This must include greater transparency and information about the risks of missed payments and credit checks before consumers are cleared to use BNPL providers."
