Which? responds to the government's consultation on product safety
Sue Davies, Which? Head of Consumer Rights Policy, said:
“It’s positive that the government has finally outlined steps to put an end to the ‘wild west’ of online marketplaces that expose shoppers to dangerous and illegal items.
“The consultation published today sets out a range of duties that will be placed on online marketplaces which should, once implemented, help to ensure consumers are much better protected. It also lays the groundwork for enforcement powers to keep shoppers safe and hold businesses to account if they break the rules.
"The challenge now will be to ensure that new laws are sufficiently strong and binding to hold online marketplaces to account. Given the scale of the problem and the lives at risk, the government must get the details right and quickly proceed with implementation.”
