Which? responds to the news the UK has signed a trade deal with New Zealand

Sue Davies, Which? Head of Consumer Protection Policy, said:

"Which?'s research is clear - people want trade deals to maintain safety standards for food and products, keep their data secure online, look after the environment and deliver for consumers in all parts of the UK.

"We are pleased to see a specific consumer protection chapter for the first time and strong focus on environmental protections included in the New Zealand trade deal. It also paves the way for closer cooperation on a wide range of issues - such as food safety, product and technical standards and data protection - but it's important this collaboration does not lower consumer protections.

"The success of future agreements will be judged on what they deliver for ordinary people in their everyday lives, not just the export opportunities they provide. The government must use this agreement to set a precedent for including a broader consumer chapter in future trade deals and ensure people's interests are properly represented in any trade deals the UK signs."
