You can just about cope if your coffee machine is irritatingly noisy and tricky to use, but if it makes a disappointing coffee then it's going to get shoved to the back of the cupboard. That's why our coffee expert blind taste more than 100 cups in just one sitting, plus we check how easy each machine is to use, clean, and to maintain.

Only Which reviews are based on weeks of lab testing by industry experts. We've made more than 1,700 shots of Espresso and use more than 60 bags of coffee for our tests. A good coffee machine will make 30 ml of espresso at the perfect temperature in less then 30 seconds. We found that many machines make a cold, weak, and an unappetizing coffee, so our expert write the taste texture, aroma, and appearance of each coffee.

We also test how well each machine froths milk, how easy it is to use and clean, and whether it's annoyingly loud. Coffee machines can cost hundreds of Pounds. So make sure that you're not left with one that makes a bad coffee and is frustrating to use. Log in or sign up to Which for a 1 Pound trial to get access to all of our reviews.

Coffee machine reviews you can trust

When we test coffee machines we ask Giles Hilton, a member of the Speciality Coffee Association, to provide his expert opinion. We test whether coffee machines from a range of big brands can regularly and reliably make at least 30ml of coffee, with a good crema (the froth on top of a black espresso) and rich aroma. We test the temperature of the coffee and also how easy the machines are to use and clean.

Which? is independent - we work for you, the consumer, so you can be sure that our product recommendations are influenced only by our test results. We don't take advertising and we buy all the products that we test ourselves, so our advice helps you to make the right choice first time and avoid costly mistakes.
