Which? Awards 2020: winning brands announced

The 14th annual Which? awards announces its winners today.

It recognises the brands that went above and beyond for consumers in a challenging year.

The impact of COVID-19 is reflected in this year’s awards, from the first ever virtual ceremony, to the new Supermarket of the Year award to recognise the particular challenge supermarkets faced during lockdown.

Which? Trusted Trader of the Year: Splash of Colour

Shortlisted brands: Furlonger Tree Services, JR Roofing Lancs, Inspiration Computers

Splash of Colour, a smaller painter and decorator family business based in Glasgow is this year’s Trusted Trader of the year.

It beat a competitive shortlist, including last year’s winners Furlonger Tree Services, due to its commitment to consumers and the community.

Its consistently excellent customer feedback and involvement in community projects and charities has also previously won it the Trader of the Month award in December 2018 and January 2020.

Your Consumer Chamption: James Williscroft, Complaints Specialist, Coventry Building Society

Shortlist: Sue Martin, Guest Services Manager, Viking UK; Kathryn Townsend, Senior Propositions Manager, Barclays UK

James was shortlisted for going above and beyond in his role to help a vulnerable customer who was suffering severe financial difficulty following an online error that saw a rent payment sent to their son’s junior ISA instead.

The ISA rules meant the customer was unable to simply send the money back to her main account.

James heard the distress of this single parent who had recently lost their job and felt strongly that, even though it was not a Coventry Building Society error and the customer’s main account was not with them, he had to try and find a solution.

James liaised with several teams and managers in Coventry Building Society to set up a new account and develop a payment plan for the customer so they could still pay their rent on time. He demonstrated true problem-solving, putting the customer first.

How we select Which? award winners

Like our product testing and investigations, the Which? Awards are completely independent. Brands can’t nominate themselves for an award or influence our choice of winners.

To select the winning brands, an expert panel of judges takes into account everything from customer service and value for money to innovation and breadth of offering. This includes the results of our product tests, investigations and satisfaction surveys.
