Post Office now open for HSBC customers

All 11,500 Post Office branches taking part

From Spring 2013, all nine million HSBC and First Direct customers will be able to access their bank accounts at 11,500 branches of the Post Office.

HSBC and First Direct customers will be able to enjoy fee-free access to their bank accounts at every Post Office. The services available will be:

  • cash withdrawals
  • cash deposits
  • cheque deposits
  • balance enquiries

Banking in a variety of ways

This initiative enhances HSBC's customer access offering. Currently, account holders have the choice of using the bank's 1,200 branches, 3,600 ATMs, phone and text banking, internet banking or its mobile app.The First Direct mobile app allows you to check balances, transfer funds and pay bills.

Brian Robertson, chief executive officer of HSBC, says: 'We recognise that our customers like to bank in a variety of different ways. This new partnership allows us to provide them with an additional opportunity to access their bank accounts at Post Office counters.'

HSBC was one of the last major banks not to allow its customers to withdraw and deposit at Post Office branches.

Post Office regeneration programme

The venture also marks another step in the Post Office's modernisation programme, which has seen £1.34 billion of Government investment.

Last month, the Post Office started selling mortgages through 'mortgage specialists' in some of its branches, with the aim of competing with other high street lenders. And in June, it announced the introduction of contactless payment terminals across all of its 11,500 branches.

Paula Vennells, chief executive of the Post Office, says: 'This new partnership comes as the Post Office embarks on the biggest network investment in its history. This agreement means that 95% of all UK debit cardholders will have access to their money at Post Office counters.
