With rainy autumn days ahead, you might be considering a new raincoat. Here are the Which? Recommended brands currently at discounted prices.
As retailers clear out inventory ahead of autumn and winter, it’s possible to find everything from lightweight anoraks to protect you from late-summer showers to insulated jackets and hi-tech waterproofs – and even hard-shell jackets designed for hiking and sailing.
For those on a budget, you can find jackets from excellent brands for as little as £75. Or, for those planning to invest, we found a jacket from top-rated brand Páramo reduced from £270 to £225.
When you’re shopping for waterproofs in the sale, always check that the jacket you’re interested in has the right level of water resistance and insulation for your needs.
Below, we’ve shared waterproof jackets we spotted at significant discounts from Which? Recommended Brands and other top-rated brands, based on our waterproof jacket survey of 3,258 real customers about 3,749 waterproof jackets.
Which? Recommended Brands with sales on waterproofs
Where possible, we’ve also shared the average price customers paid in our survey, so you can compare the price of sale jackets and make sure you’re getting a good deal — just keep in mind that prices vary depending on the style and other special features a jacket may offer.
You can also check prices on similar products from the same brand if you spot a deal — for example, jackets in the same style and size but in a different colour.
We’ve also looked into each shop’s returns policy, including for sale items, to give you peace of mind when shopping for clearance outdoor gear.
Páramo
Average price paid by customers: £248
Páramo, which scored the highest in our survey, has an ‘Archives’ section on its site offering ‘the last pieces from past collections at reduced prices’.
There’s plenty of choice in styles for any gender, including the hard-wearing waterproof Helki Jacket, which is down from £270 to £225. The same jacket has been listed as £270 for six months, at two different retailers.
There’s also the Cascada jacket for men and women, designed to keep walkers dry in any weather using 'Nikwax Analogy' fabric — something claimed to mimic animal fur to keep moisture out (now £250, previously listed as £280).
We also spotted a ‘lightweight, windproof and showerproof’ Bentu Jacket for men and for women, which is now £112, having been previously listed as £130. In other colours, this style still costs £130.
Returns policy: Return items within 80 days as long as they’re still in perfect condition.
Barbour
Average price paid by customers: £198
Shopping direct on the Barbour site, we didn’t find any waterproofs in the sale. But retailer Frasers had a selection of showerproof and waterproof jackets, albeit in limited sizes.
On the men’s section of the site, we spotted an RE Mountain wax jacket in small, previously listed at £399, now £279.
There’s also a Winter Powell long-sleeve waterproof in size 2XL, previously listed as £269, now priced at £189, and the Riverdale anorak, with a hood and long sleeves in small and XL.
In the women’s section, we found a full-length Dena hooded anorak, previously priced on the site at £229, now listed at £149 in sizes M-2XL (12-18).
There was also a women’s Recoleta hooded anorak in sizes M-XL (12-14), previously listed at £179, now listed at £55, and a cropped Atlanta anorak in M (12) and XL-2XL (16-28) for £109, listed as previously costing £219.
Returns policy: Frasers customers have 28 days to return orders from the day they're delivered, but it costs £4.99.
Rohan
Average price paid by customers: £154
There's up to 60% off Rohan items, with jackets on sale for up to 50% off. Handily, you can select a ‘waterproof jackets’ filter and the gender you prefer to whittle down results.
We found 32 different jackets on sale for anywhere from 30-50% off.
The cheapest option we found was a Women’s Daybreak Barricade in black for just £75 (50% off from the previously listed price of £150) available in S, and a Women’s Astral Barricade in red for £84 in sizes XS-XL.
There’s also a discount of 50% off a women’s Ventus Barricade waterproof jacket, at £175, from the previously listed price of £350. It is designed for severe weather.
The Valen Barricade, a lightweight waterproof, is listed as 40% off in both men’s and women’s styles, now costing £199 down from the previously listed price of £350.
For something slightly more durable, the men’s Corniston Barricade Waterproof is available in a range of colours and sizes, now listed as £138, from the previously listed price of £230.
Outside of the sale, similar styles of waterproof jackets for men are listed as costing from £200-£300, and for women from £160-£300.
Returns policy: Rohan offers free returns – just fill out its Royal Mail free returns form.
Helly Hansen
Average price paid by customers: £124
Helly Hansen’s sale is also offering up to 50% off, and the sale search function offers three types of ‘Waterproofness’ filter – quick dry, water resistant and waterproof.
We found 76 waterproof jackets on clearance across men's and women’s styles. It’s also worth filtering for the approximate size you’re looking for to avoid disappointment, as some styles are only available in a few sizes or colours.
The cheapest jacket we found was the Moss Rain Jacket at £48 (the previously listed price was £80), and Vancouver Rain Jacket for women at £60 (previously listed as £120.) For men, it was the Loke Terra Jacket, costing £70 (previously listed as £140).
But even some of the brand’s most expensive sailing jackets, such as the Men's Ægir Ocean Smock, are included in the sale. In this case, now costing £480, having previously been listed as £700 according to the site.
Full-price waterproof jackets on the site currently cost between £160-£400 for men’s styles and £145-£270 for women’s styles.
Returns policy: Helly Hansen offers a 30-day free return policy by filling out its free returns form.
Musto
Average price paid by customers: £n/a (no average price available in our survey)
We found several waterproof options at a discount in Musto’s summer archive coats and jackets sale, with discounts up to 50% off.
There were slightly more options available in men’s styles. The cheapest we found was Men’s Rain Jacket in all sizes, discounted from the previously listed price of £135 down to £81, but we also spotted a three-layer Gore-tex Lunan JKT jacket with taped seams at 40% off, down to £156 (the previously listed price was £275.
The Sardinia jacket, designed for ‘occasional sailors’ is also a versatile waterproof option, and in the sale at £105, down from the previously listed price of £175 for men and women.
More expensive options designed for offshore sailing in the toughest conditions are also available at £453.75, down from the previously listed price of £825.
Full-price waterproof jackets on the site currently cost between £145-£675 for men’s styles, £185-£260 for women’s styles.
Returns policy: Free returns within 30 days.
Adidas TERREX
We didn’t find any waterproof jackets suitable for autumn in the Adidas TERREX Outlet sale this time.
You can filter through Adidas’s Outlet by ‘technologies’ such as CLIMAPROOF and GORE-TEX, or by features such as ‘waterproof’ or ‘water-repellent’. However, we only found 11 jackets for adults listed when we filtered for waterproof jackets, and these were insulated puffer jackets or snowsports jackets.
Other top brands with sales now on
Regatta, though not a Which? Recommended Brand, is a top budget pick, scoring a full five stars for value for money. It's currently holding a sale, but does so more often than other brands, so you’re likely to find a budget price at any time of year.
Premium brand Arc’teryx wasn’t selected as Which? Recommended Brand in our latest survey, but still performed well. Its jackets — though stylish — are pricey, meaning it only scored three stars out of five for value for money. But the online Arc’teryx outlet is currently offering significant discounts on previous season styles and colours, meaning you could find a high-quality waterproof at a better price than usual — though sizes and colours may be limited.
