Which? responds as ONS releases latest inflation figures for January

Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said:

“With households up and down the country struggling to make ends meet, many people will be worried that prices are continuing to rise.

“These latest food figures are deeply concerning, and reflect Which?’s own inflation tracker, which shows the dramatic impact the cost of living crisis is having on everyday products at the supermarket. Supermarkets should ensure everyone has easy access to basic, affordable food ranges and provide clear unit pricing so people can easily work out the best value items

“Several telecoms companies will also use today’s RPI rate to calculate mid-contract price rises. This means millions of consumers could now find themselves trapped in a lose-lose situation where they either have to accept exorbitant mid-contract price hikes this Spring or pay costly exit fees to leave their contract early. Which? is calling on telecoms providers to consider very carefully if this level of price increases can be justified, let their customers leave without penalty if they face mid-contract price hikes, and cancel 2023 mid-contract price rises for financially vulnerable consumers.”
