A great cooker hood will quietly clear your kitchen of steam in a flash, while mopping up any grease or odours from your fry-ups. But not all do – some make a racket, leave grease settling on your surfaces and fill your kitchen with humidity.
It's impossible to tell how well a cooker hood will work based on looks. To banish the guesswork, see below for our choice of the best five cooker hoods we’ve tested. Whether you want a striking chimney hood or a discreet overhead extractor fan, we've highlighted some excellent choices.

How to choose the best cooker hood for you
Should I buy a chimney hood?
There are a range of different types of cooker hood. No one type does better than another in our tests, so the style you go for is largely a matter of personal preference.
Chimney hoods are the most popular choice, and there are plenty to choose from. Chimney hoods have a canopy that sits above your cooking area, with a flue (or chimney) above it fitted against the wall. They tend to stand out and can be a striking focal point above a hob or cooker.
The next most popular choice is a canopy hood. More discreet, these sit flush with the base of a kitchen unit above the cooking surface, so you won't really notice it at all until it comes to turning it on. Some have a pull-out telescopic section which extends over the hob to guide moisture, smells and airborne grease up towards the extractor.
What size cooker hood should I buy?
Make sure your cooker hood is at least the same width as your hob or cooker.
The most popular size by far is 60cm, but there are lots of 90cm-wide models, and others in between these sizes. If you have a large range cooker with a particularly wide cooking surface, you'll find a smaller selection of 100cm-plus cooker hoods to choose from.
We also recommend taking the size of your kitchen into account. Each of our cooker hood reviews tells you how much air each cooker hood extracts and what size of kitchen this makes it appropriate for.
What cooker hood features are worth having?
Here are some features to look out for that make your cooker hood easier to use.
• Boost This is a high-power function, handy for those times when you need to clear the air quickly. It usually runs for five or six minutes before reverting to the original setting automatically.
• Delayed off This function means you can leave the hood working away while you sit down to eat your meal. It will turn off automatically 15 or 20 minutes later.
• Hob-to-hood WiFi Some hobs and hoods have a wireless connection that means the hob activates and adjusts the cooker hood automatically depending on what you are cooking.
