How we test sparkling water makers

We buy the bestselling sparkling water makers and put them through our tough tests. We don't accept freebies from product manufacturers or retailers.
We regularly revisit the sparkling water makers on sale to see if there are any more popular models that need testing – and when we find them, we do.
Each sparkling water maker is assessed on the following:
- Ease of setup We assess how easy it is to set up each sparkling water maker, including inserting the CO2 cylinder and water bottle.
- Ease of use We make sparkling water in each machine according to the instructions, rating how simple it is to fizz the water.
- Fizzability We rate each machine on how easy it is to get to a good level of fizziness compared with bottled sparkling water.
- Build quality We give a final rating for how sturdy it feels and how good it looks on a kitchen countertop.

How long does Sodastream gas last?

Sodastream and other sparkling water makers' gas cylinders all claim to make 60 litres of sparkling water, but this will vary depending on how fizzy you like your beverages.
We calculated how much CO2 is used when fizzing water to the maximum suggested level in two top-rated sparkling water makers. We found that if you make very fizzy water every time, you would only get just over 30 litres.
Once the cylinder is empty, there are various recycling and refill options available. See our reviews for more information. New cylinders tend to cost £13 to £20.
Make sure to insert the CO2 cylinder properly and fill the water bottle to the fill line to ensure all the gas goes into your drink and isn't wasted.

Are sparkling water makers good for the planet?

If you buy a lot of sparkling water from the supermarket, getting a fizzy water maker will massively reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles that end up in your recycling bin.
However, the bottles that are included with a sparkling water maker won't last forever, as subjecting them to repeated use as pressurised containers over a long period of time causes inevitable wear and tear.
For example, Sodastream advises customers to replace the bottles after three years. The bottles are made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which can be recycled along with the other recyclable plastics in your household.
If you used your sparkling water maker to make four litres of fizzy water a week for that three-year life cycle, you'd recycle two bottles instead of approximately 312 that you'd buy from the supermarket.
However, bear in mind the energy used to transport and recycle them all still makes for a significant carbon footprint.
A couple of the machines we tested – the Aarke Carbonator Pro and Sodastream Duo – use glass bottles that don't need to be replaced unless they get damaged.
You might also be concerned about the CO2 you're buying to carbonate the water. However, as with most fizzy drinks sold in supermarkets, the CO2 is usually a by-product of the manufacturing of other products, which is then used to carbonate the drinks. The CO2 is not produced solely for use with sparkling water makers.
Can you make other drinks with a Sodastream?

Most sparkling water makers only allow you to carbonate water. Once you've got it to your preferred level of fizziness, you can then add different flavours and syrups.
However, several of the models we tested give you the option to fizz other beverages: the Bibo Fizz, Drinkmate Omnifizz, Sage InFizz and Sodastream Mix.
